During the blasting process, sections of the mask material are removed or “pulled” exposing the clear glass underneath that is to be blasted. The mask sections are removed in a sequential way to achieve the correct layering of the objects portrayed in the drawing. The glass pieces shown in the photos represent floral designs so the parts of the leaves and flowers are pulled one section at a time to achieve the proper dimensionality to the image. This creates the perception of leaves being in front as well as receding into the background. There can be hundreds of “pulls” per piece in the case of a complex image like this one.
