Process | Stage 3
The system for sandblasting glass involves the use of a “Pressure Pot” filled with Silicon Carbide, an industrial grit, rather than sand. The pot is pressurized with air and a controlled mixture of grit and air flow through a hose and nozzle system at a variable pressure to create a spray of grit. When that grit hits the surface of the glass it etches the surface with light opaque coloration. Imagery can be carved deeper into the glass by blasting in the same place for a longer period of time until you reach the desired depth. An area of glass that is deeply etched is referred to as “carved” whereas an area of light opaque coloration at the surface where no depth occurs is referred to as “frosted.”
